Mira Wölfel and Dominique Ewert discuss the future of Prolight + Sound in an interview with ISP Audio & Light

Prolight + Sound Frankfurt is an emblematic trade fair in the entertainment technology sector, renowned for its specialized focus on market verticals. This event has established itself as an essential meeting point for professionals in lighting, sound, stage production, and other technical entertainment areas.

Its size is carefully balanced: large enough to provide a comprehensive overview of the most relevant innovations in the sector, yet compact enough to be entirely explored without getting lost in unrelated areas. Unlike more general events, Prolight + Sound maintains a focus that caters to the specific needs of each segment, achieving a unique balance.

With a well-established tradition and international presence through its 'family' of trade fairs in regions like Guangzhou and the Middle East, Prolight + Sound acts as a global bridge, connecting professionals and trends that converge in Europe. In this context, we look forward to the 2025 edition, a year that promises to solidify its prestige and relevance after the global challenges that have affected the industry in recent years.

How would you describe the evolution of Prolight + Sound from its beginnings to the 2025 edition?

Mira Wölfel, Director Brand Management Prolight + Sound:

Prolight + Sound has been at the forefront of the global event technology sector for 30 years now. This is quite impressive. Since its debut in 1995, the show has continually evolved to reflect industry trends, providing a comprehensive showcase for innovative technologies in lighting, sound, stage design, and beyond. The 2024 show attracted almost 25,000 visitors from 122 countries.

For 2025, we are building on this legacy by celebrating our 30th anniversary with an enhanced focus on sustainability, immersive technologies, and industry-wide collaboration. Prolight + Sound has always been about evolution, and the upcoming edition promises to be our most transformative yet.

What new features or distinctive approaches will Prolight + Sound 2025 bring compared to previous editions?

MW: One point is essential for Messe Frankfurt: We listen to our customers. Based on that exchange with our exhibitors and partners, the 2025 show will be centred around three top themes that will be reflected in the specialist programme and in product solutions.

  • The first, ProGreen, highlights the latest trends and developments in eco-friendly solutions and sustainability practices in the event industry.
  • The second, FutureScapes, explores the potential of immersive technologies and artificial intelligence in creating unique audience experiences.
  • Finally, MultiTech focuses on smart, multifunctional technologies that enhance flexibility and efficiency in the event sector.

We are also introducing a redesigned Theatre Area in Hall 12.0, which will combine exhibition, education, networking, and product showcases. On the new Theatre Stage, the Theatre College will offer expert-led seminars, while the Theatre Talk will invite exhibitors and the trade audience to exchange ideas. The Networking Area promises an ideal setting for sharing ideas and connecting in a relaxed atmosphere.

Another exciting addition is the MixLab, a new format in the ProAudio section. Attendees can try out the latest mixing technologies, participate in practical workshops, and complete certified training courses. A major new feature is also MusicOneX, an interactive hub spanning 3,000 sqm. Here, visitors can explore the fusion of creativity and technology through hands-on experiences, product demos and live performances.

By introducing these fresh elements, Prolight + Sound 2025 aspires to be a celebration of creativity, innovation and community while addressing the evolving needs of the industry.

After the pandemic, international trade fair circuits have undergone significant changes. What measures has Prolight + Sound taken to adapt and strengthen its position in this new scenario?

Dominique Ewert, Director Marketing Communications Prolight + Sound, adds:

After the pandemic, during which we were not allowed to hold events, one thing has become more than clear: There is no substitute for the value of personal encounters. Like most of our shows, Prolight + Sound has embraced change with resilience and fresh new concepts, ensuring its continued relevance as a global event.

A significant milestone this year was the formation of an advisory board. Composed of industry experts, it provides strategic input to align the show with the needs of the global entertainment technology sector.

Addressing current industry challenges, we’re putting a stronger focus on knowledge transfer and education, with enhanced programmes to support professionals and young talent alike. We are further prioritising the interests of the event technology community through in-depth conversations with our exhibitors and partners. At the upcoming show, this is being reflected in the top themes and exciting new formats that Mira mentioned.

What would you say to those who describe Prolight + Sound as a 'local' fair or one exclusively for the German market?

DE: Well, I would answer that Prolight + Sound is actually far from being a local event – the most recent figures are further proof of that. As Mira mentioned, the 2024 edition welcomed visitors from 122 countries. With 41% of these visitors coming from outside Germany, and more than 50% of exhibitors and brands being international, the show serves as one of the main global platforms for the entertainment technology community.

On top of that, our central location in Frankfurt, coupled with excellent infrastructure like Frankfurt Airport and Main Train Station, ensures seamless access for participants worldwide.

How do the international editions of the Prolight + Sound family contribute to the success of the European edition in Frankfurt?

MW: The international editions of Prolight + Sound are instrumental in strengthening the Prolight + Sound brand on a global scale. A prime example is Prolight + Sound Guangzhou, which has established itself as the largest entertainment and ProAV industry event in the world. In 2024, it hosted over 2,100 exhibitors and attracted more than 107,000 visitors, showcasing the growing demand for event technology across Asia.

The insights gained from Guangzhou’s rapid growth help us identify emerging trends and anticipate industry needs on a global level.

By maintaining a strong presence in diverse regions, the Prolight + Sound brand family fosters a global network of industry professionals. These regional events provide platforms for innovation and collaboration, which inform the strategic direction of the Frankfurt edition. This interconnected approach ensures that Frankfurt remains a central hub for the global event technology community, enriched by international perspectives and best practices.

The size of the fair allows for a specialized focus. How do you manage to maintain this balance between specialization and diversity in such a broad market?

DE: At Prolight + Sound, we achieve this balance by organising the event into distinct pillars - ProLight, ProAudio, ProStage, ProAV, and ProEvent -, each tailored to its specific community. This allows us to delve deeply into specialised topics while maintaining the diversity needed to represent the broad spectrum of entertainment technology.

New concepts, like the redesigned theatre area or MusicOneX, and industry-shaping top themes ensure that all sectors receive targeted attention while fostering cross-industry collaboration and inspiration.

From your perspective, which sectors or market verticals within entertainment technology are showing the most dynamism, and why?

MW: Several sectors within entertainment technology are experiencing remarkable dynamism.

  • Immersive technologies, including virtual and augmented reality, are revolutionising how audiences engage with live events by enabling deeply interactive experiences. This is particularly evident in theatres, theme parks, and large-scale live productions, where these innovations are transforming narratives and enhancing immersion.
  • Sustainability is another dynamic aspect, driven by increased environmental awareness. Energy-efficient lighting systems, eco-friendly staging materials, and sustainable practices are becoming essential components of modern event planning.
  • Meanwhile, artificial intelligence is reshaping the industry by enabling real-time adaptability in lighting, sound engineering, and event management, pushing the boundaries of what is creatively possible.
  • The integration of hybrid event models—blending physical and virtual experiences—has also gained traction in the post-pandemic era, allowing event organisers to reach broader audiences while maintaining immersive experiences.

At Prolight + Sound 2025, these trends are reflected in the top themes I mentioned earlier, and also in special areas like the Image Creation Hub and MusicOneX. They are making the event a platform for professionals to explore and embrace these advancements.

What benefits can exhibitors expect from participating in Prolight + Sound 2025, and what standout experiences can professional visitors look forward to?

MW: Exhibitors can expect vast opportunities for global exposure, with the event drawing a highly qualified and diverse audience with a high internationality rate. Special platforms like the Live Sound Arena and the Live & Demo Box, will ensure exhibitors can showcase their product innovations effectively. Additionally, networking opportunities through programmes like the Hosted Buyer Programme and the Messe Frankfurt Business Club enable exhibitors to connect with decision-makers and key industry players.

For visitors, the event promises an expanded educational offering, including bilingual sessions at the ProAudio-, Theatre-, and Camera Colleges. New attractions like the MixLab and MusicOneX as well as the redesigned Theatre area will offer visitors an interactive approach and exciting insights into cutting-edge technology. In the Future Hub, professionals and young talent can connect with renowned companies with vacancies and gain information on career opportunities in the event industry.

What specific initiatives does Prolight + Sound have to promote sustainability in the entertainment technology sector?

DE: Sustainability is at the core of Prolight + Sound 2025, reflected in the top theme ProGreen: Impulses for a more sustainable event industry. This encompasses trends promoting eco-friendly practices, including the 'Green Sessions' in collaboration with the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC), keynotes and guided tours highlighting sustainable solutions. These efforts not only raise awareness – they actively encourage the adoption of environmentally responsible solutions across the industry, reinforcing our commitment to a greener future.

Why do you believe that Prolight + Sound 2025 will be an unmissable event for both exhibitors and visitors?

The 2025 edition of Prolight + Sound promises an outstanding experience for both exhibitors and visitors. Around 70% of the 2024 audience held decision-making authority, with the rate expected to be matched or exceeded in 2025. At the same time, 25% of our visitors are under the age of 25 - the future professionals of this industry. That makes the upcoming show a prime venue for business networking, exchanging ideas and developing new projects. Dominique Ewert.

Prolight + Sound is the place to be for everybody who is passionate about event and entertainment technology. Right, Mira?

Absolutely! Alongside this, the top themes of the show will highlight industry-shaping topics like trends in immersive technologies and new sustainable or multi-functional solutions. Combined with the extensive educational and networking opportunities, including the free Community Nights, the show will create a unique blend of business, learning, and entertainment while inspiring and connecting industry professionals from around the world – making it an unmissable experience for all participants. We’re all really looking forward to welcoming the industry in Frankfurt in April next year!. Mira Wölfel.
