Vibrant colours, deep blacks, and moving set pieces come brilliantly to life in Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, the stage adaptation of PJ Hogan’s beloved 1994 film.
The just-concluded UK premiere at Leicester’s Curve Theatre featured a striking scenic design dominated by more than 400 INFiLED DBmk2 Series LED panels.
Designed by Andrzej Goulding, the production blends theatrical storytelling with a playful, modern aesthetic, featuring oversized mobile phone frames, animated graphics and vivid, Australian-inspired visuals. To realise Goulding’s creative vision, the technical team needed an LED solution capable of delivering deep contrast, faithful colour reproduction at low brightness, and seamless integration with the physical set.

INFiLED’s DBmk2 Series, with its 10,000:1 contrast ratio and matte black surface, proved ideal for the job. The panels maintained colour fidelity even when running at just 500 nits, thanks to INFiLED’s proprietary CBSF (Color & Brightness Shift Free) technology. “The blacks were deep, the whites were clean, and it just looked great on stage”, confirms Dan Trenchard, video engineer for Muriel’s Wedding. The reduced surface reflection also helped preserve the illusion of depth and shadow across a variety of scenic elements.
Thanks to CBSF, the DBmk2 Series offers uniform brightness and color reproduction from every angle.
The challenge is that the darker you make the wall, the worse the color reproduction can become. For this show, we’re running most of the product at about 500 nits. At this lower brightness, we still need the color reproduction to be just as accurate as when the screen is at full brightness, continues Trenchard.
The musical’s dynamic set features two automated LED sliders (representing smartphone screens) that move across the stage in time with the action. Bring lightweight and easy to configure, the modular 500 × 500mm INFiLED panels allowed the video team to create irregular wall shapes tailored to the unique framing requirements of the show.
In total, 412 DBmk2 panels were deployed: a 11m × 7m backwall made up of 308 panels, 56 panels on a downstage automated slider, and 48 panels on an upstage automated slider. All screens were powered by a Disguise EX3+ media server and driven by Brompton SX40 processors with XD distribution, ensuring smooth, responsive performance throughout the run.
Responsive support from INFiLED’s UK-based team helped keep production on track, with round-the-clock availability to troubleshoot and respond to late-night issues.
One of the biggest advantages is having a UK-based team to work with and time zones are also crucial. We often face problems late at night and need a solution by the morning. With INFiLED, we don’t have to wait days for an answer, which is a big relief, explains Trenchard.
Muriel’s Wedding The Musical opened on 10 April and ran through 10 May 2025. The production has been met with positive reviews from audiences and critics alike, praised for its humour, heart and stunning stagecraft.
For Trenchard, the success of Muriel’s Wedding is about more than just stand-out visuals – it’s about trust, collaboration, and smooth production workflows, he explains: “The relationship between manufacturer and supplier is key. I trust that if Stage Sound Service is satisfied with INFiLED, then I know I’m in good hands”.
Working with long-time partners like Stage Sound Services and Brompton – whose 10-bit processing technology complemented the INFiLED displays for broadcast-quality visuals – created a streamlined, stress-free production environment, concludes Trenchard: “LED technology can feel a bit mysterious at first, especially when you’re working with new products. But with INFiLED and Brompton, things are becoming much more user-friendly”.
