BBC Studioworks, the BBC’s commercial studios and post-production division, has upgraded its flagship Television Centre facility in London with two INFiLED DBmk2 Series LED screens.
These displays form the backdrop designed for the new broadcast studio hosting the live National Lottery draws, which air six nights a week to audiences across the UK.
When Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, sought a new home for its live draws, BBC Studioworks proposed a newly built studio at Television Centre capable of delivering the reliability and visual flexibility required for a production of this scale.
At the heart of the installation are two 5 x 3 metre INFiLED DBmk2 LED screens with a 1.95 mm pixel pitch, arranged at a 90-degree angle. This configuration allows the studio environment to be instantly transformed, adapting to different games with distinct visual identities at the push of a button.
Allwyn’s brief required a dynamic, easily updatable backdrop capable of supporting multiple games with different visual styles within a single space. In addition, with live broadcasts taking place six nights a week, there was no margin for error, making system reliability critical.
The design also needed to keep the focus on the central element of the show: the draw machine. As the focal point of the production, the surrounding environment had to enhance it without distracting from the numbers being drawn.
Managing moiré effects and visual interference was a key aspect of the project. By using a fine 1.95 mm pixel pitch, combined with proper camera depth-of-field control and optical filtering, the team ensured that the LED structure would not interfere with camera sensors, delivering a clean image even in close-up shots. In addition, INFiLED’s CBSF (Color and Brightness Shift Free) technology, built into the DBmk2 Series, maintains a stable colour temperature across a wide 160-degree viewing angle.
We had a tight deadline to transition Allwyn to its new studio without interrupting its regular six-night-a-week broadcast schedule. It was essential to get it right and ensure everything ran smoothly from day one, explains Tim Wood, head of Television Centre at BBC Studioworks.
BBC Studioworks selected the INFiLED DBmk2 Series for its high resolution, mechanical reliability, and competitive positioning in the broadcast market. “We chose this series for its reliability and resolution”, Wood adds. “We were very impressed with the product quality visually, electronically, and mechanically”.
The DBmk2 Series is designed for extended reality (XR), virtual production, and broadcast environments, where fine pixel pitch, colour accuracy, and high contrast are essential. Its ultra-black LED surface enhances perceived contrast, enabling vivid imagery while maintaining controlled black levels—particularly important in studio environments with precise lighting requirements.

Before final procurement, BBC Studioworks carried out extensive testing to evaluate performance under its own camera conditions.
We were very pleased with the demo panel provided by INFiLED, as well as the team’s technical support. It allowed us to test the screens with our own cameras and confirm that we could achieve the desired look and feel. After that, the ordering and delivery process was very straightforward, Wood comments.
With the studio now fully operational, production is running consistently week after week. “The studio is fully up and running, and our client, Allwyn UK, couldn’t be happier”, Wood concludes.
With the DBmk2 LED screens at its core, BBC Studioworks has created a flexible and reliable broadcast environment that keeps the focus on the draws. By combining fine-pitch LED technology, practical design, and efficient system architecture, the studio is built to deliver consistent performance night after night.
