Lighting a festival in a former power plant is, without a doubt, an invitation to create electrifying images. The Onedot team certainly understood this and took that inspiration to the next level during the three-day Lumen Festival, produced by Produkt at New City Gas, a venue that traces its origins back to an emblematic generating station from 1849.
The venue, with its strong industrial aesthetic, continues to reflect the weight of its proud history. The Onedot designers knew how to make the most of that unique atmosphere to create an intense and energetic show, full of dynamism, that accompanied performances by Timmy Trumpet, Gordo, Adventure Club and other EDM stars.
The Onedot design team suspended light bars from the vaulted ceiling over the dance floor, using motorized systems that allowed them to move during the show. As they shifted across the room, these bars amplified the force of the performances and traced pulsating lines of color in the air. Thanks to this dynamic system, the designers could transform and redefine the space in real time. The powerful monochromatic washes enveloped the audience in a vibrant, transformative atmosphere. At other moments, the ambience became darker and more melancholic, reflecting the creators’ intention to convey a wide range of emotions.

The large videowall that dominated the stage took the powerful visual effects to another level. Divided into vertical sections, the video backdrop displayed hypnotic abstract geometric patterns. These patterns were often projected in stark white against an icy blue background, increasing the intensity and reinforcing the visual identity of the festival.
Complementing the visual element and blending it seamlessly with the rest of the space was a set of 36 CHAUVET Professional Color STRIKE M fixtures, provided by CR34TE’s inventory. Almost half of the motorized strobes were mounted on vertical columns between the sections of the videowall, while the remaining units were arranged on the ceiling above the dance floor.

We positioned the Color STRIKE M units in an array to complement the powerful visual elements on stage so that we could extend the visual pattern throughout the room. The Color STRIKE Ms worked very well for us both as strobes and as color washes. We mapped individual pixels to create a wide variety of unique visual patterns. This reinforced the video images very effectively, said Jean-Sébastien Guilmette of Onedot.
The combination of video and lighting worked perfectly for Onedot at New City Gas, achieving an impressive result. In this former power station, it was once again proven what physics reminds us: great power lies in fusion.
