GLP amplifies the visual impact of Russell Dickerson's most ambitious tour

Russell Dickerson's RussellMania Tour is one of the most ambitious country music headline tours of the year, taking the multi-platinum artist to arenas, outdoor amphitheatres and major festivals across North America in support of Famous Back Home, his fourth studio album.

Representing a significant step up in production scale while spanning a wide variety of venue formats, the lighting system needed to deliver consistent visual impact in every environment. GLP's JDC1 hybrid LED strobes played a key role in bringing the entire lighting design together.

Lighting design, programming and creative direction were led by Nick Chang, owner and lighting/production designer at Prismic Productions, together with creative director and project manager Chris Diener. Chang was brought on board by production manager Zander Scott just six weeks before production rehearsals began. This demanding schedule required the rig design, programming of 20 songs and development of the tour's creative concept to be completed simultaneously, with the grandMA3 show file built from the outset to scale quickly for major festival appearances. The equipment package was finalised with Christie Lites, while the visual content was developed in close collaboration with tour content creator Andy Reuter to ensure that lighting, video and special effects worked together seamlessly throughout the show.

The 108 JDC1 fixtures are deployed across every major element of the rig. Six fanned, raked structures each feature a vertical truss section on the downstage side equipped with 11 JDC1 fixtures alongside additional luminaires. Two side structures flanking the video wall each incorporate eight JDC1 units, while the upstage floor package combines another eight JDC1s with additional fixtures. The riser package integrates 18 JDC1 fixtures directly into the scenic elements.

The JDC1 combines a high-intensity white strobe tube with a front array of 1,320 RGB LEDs divided into 12 independently controllable sections. Both light sources can operate continuously to create blinder and wash effects, while the 185-degree motorised tilt with 16-bit resolution enables highly accurate repositioning throughout the performance.

From the beginning, I knew Russell's music needed a rig capable of delivering real impact in any environment, whether it was an arena, an amphitheatre or a festival stage in broad daylight. The JDC1 ticked every box. It's incredibly powerful, extremely versatile and, on top of that, its physical design is very discreet even before you start programming it, explains Chang.

The fixture's hybrid design, capable of functioning simultaneously as a strobe, wash and pixel-mapped effects unit, proved ideal for a tour that needed maximum versatility without increasing system complexity.

"One of the things I love most about the JDC1 is that it isn't a one-trick fixture", says Chang. "Its hybrid nature was a huge advantage on this production because we needed the rig to do a lot without unnecessarily complicating the system".

Chang made extensive use of the JDC1's pixel-mapping capabilities throughout the show, using the independent control of its 12 sections across all 108 fixtures to move between subtle sparkle effects and dynamic rig-wide chases from song to song. This flexibility proved especially valuable in a production built around a drummer with a highly energetic, gospel-inspired playing style.

The JDCs allow me to separate different musical elements within a single fixture. I used the strobe for snare hits, the colour plate for kick accents and the pixel effects to reinforce transitions and song progression. That allowed the rig to feel huge while remaining incredibly detailed, which was exactly what this show needed, explains Chang.

The design also needed to reflect the full breadth of Dickerson's catalogue, from high-energy anthems to more intimate mid-tempo songs. Chang therefore ensured the system could adapt to both ends of that spectrum without losing its visual coherence. "We didn't want the show to become a nonstop sequence of flashes for the sake of it", he says. "Every lighting cue, every piece of visual content and every visual accent was designed to reinforce the emotion and energy of the music in a meaningful way".

The production has been extremely well received by Dickerson, his management team and the entire touring crew. The RussellMania Tour represents a significant step forward in both production scale and creative ambition for the artist. Throughout the tour, the JDC1's consistent performance across every type of venue has been one of the key elements behind the show's visual impact.

I've used GLP fixtures on projects and shows of every size for many years, and they've always delivered outstanding visual impact and road-proven reliability. The JDC1 is already a thoroughly proven fixture. It did exactly what we needed, night after night, concludes Chang.

The RussellMania Tour 2026 continues across the United States and Canada through October.
