Maroon 5 marks the end of the analog era with Sennheiser Spectera

For 25 years, monitor engineer Dave Rupsch has been responsible for monitor sound on high-level tours for global icons such as My Chemical Romance, Katy Perry, Megadeth, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nick Jonas, and many others.

He has witnessed the industry’s digital revolution, watching line array systems and consoles evolve into extraordinarily precise tools. However, one key element remained firmly anchored in the past. For Rupsch, achieving a seamless, end-to-end digital IEM transmission was his “white whale”: the essential component needed to fully close the loop on modern live audio technology. For many years, that goal seemed unattainable.

That search came to an end during Maroon 5’s 2025 tour. Although Rupsch had spent years working with analog wireless systems, it was becoming increasingly difficult to avoid the issues caused by congestion in the UHF spectrum. This became evident at the tour’s opening show in Phoenix, a city known for having an almost fully saturated radio spectrum. There, the team realized that factors such as increased noise floor and limited operational flexibility were becoming an unnecessary source of stress in a job that is already psychologically demanding, Rupsch explained.

In search of a premium experience for the band, Rupsch decided the time had come to move beyond the limitations of traditional RF and, with the support of Clair Global, put the Sennheiser Spectera system to the test—the world’s first wideband, bidirectional digital wireless ecosystem.

 

The move from a simple trial to a full deployment with the entire band happened much faster than expected. Initially, Rupsch planned to introduce the technology gradually—as he jokingly puts it, “in the Wild West, the first guy through the saloon door is the one who gets shot”. For that reason, only the technical crew and the music director (MD) used the Spectera packs at first. However, the results were immediately apparent.

Within less than five minutes, the MD approached Rupsch to say that the pack sounded fantastic before heading onstage to show it to the rest of the band, prompting them to immediately ask why they were not using it yet. Rupsch recalled: “Our ‘trial period’ lasted about five minutes before Spectera ended up being used on every show of the tour”. The improvement in audio quality was due to the absence of traditional analog artifacts.

Rupsch noted that “the absence of analog RF artifacts such as noise floor, swishes, pops, or clicks allowed performers to focus on the finest details of the mix”. The band’s studio engineer immediately reacted to the spacious stereo image, while several band members commented that it was the clearest they had ever heard themselves.

Beyond the leap in sonic fidelity, Spectera’s architecture has fundamentally redefined Dave Rupsch’s monitor workflow. One key efficiency is the move from traditional BNC to standard Cat 5 cabling for antenna deployment.

 

Cat 5 is much more flexible and easier to coil. It’s now possible to add it to our cross-stage looms without the signal loss or interference typically associated with long analog cable runs, Rupsch noted.

 

Because these antennas are smaller and lighter than conventional helical models, they can be easily clamp-mounted to structures and scaffolding anywhere in the venue.

The system’s ability to “bend” around corners and walls is driven by its high-density network of multiple antennas. For Maroon 5’s arena tour, Rupsch used a four-antenna configuration, placing units at stage right, stage left, on the thrust, and in backstage. This setup ensured that Adam Levine remained connected even when moving through the crowd, upstage, or into the dressing rooms.

Rupsch recommends using at least three antennas on standard arena stages to guarantee a stable connection from the very moment the artist puts on the pack in backstage. This multipoint coverage strategy creates a robust network capable of maintaining signal integrity even through physical barriers, providing continuous coverage throughout the performance area and the venue concourse.

Looking ahead to a major stadium tour in 2026 with My Chemical Romance, Spectera has gone from being a technological curiosity to an essential tool.

 

Rupsch plans to work with two base stations, designed for large-scale environments and for artists using headset microphones who can take advantage of Spectera’s dual transmit and receive capabilities. For Rupsch, this represents the end of a fifteen-year wait for the industry.

 

As engineers and RF coordinators, we’ve been waiting for these advancements to finally become reality, he reflects.

 

By delivering a clean, high-quality, and sonically satisfying digital IEM transmission, the “white whale” has finally been caught, providing the reliability and purity that the modern stage demands.
