A new L-Acoustics 360° A Series system brings immersive sound to the main floor

Since opening its doors in 2004, Bootshaus has built one of the most recognisable identities in electronic music. The Cologne club, consistently ranked by DJ Mag among the best in the world and recognised as the world’s fourth-best nightclub in 2025, stands out for its spectacular shows and top-notch sound.

Flamethrowers and CO₂ cannons are part of the Bootshaus mythology, but the club’s sustained position at the top of international rankings reflects a more deliberate commitment to attracting the best artists in the world—because its sound is worth the trip.

Now, as Bootshaus marks its 22nd anniversary, the club is making its most significant audio investment yet: upgrading the main floor with L-Acoustics DJ and a new 360° A Series 8.1.7 loudspeaker configuration. The system will debut on June 5 with Holy Priest and June 12 with Don Diablo.

Keeping the best artists on the bill

Niclas Aigner, COO at Bootshaus, experienced L-Acoustics DJ first-hand during Amsterdam Dance Event 2025, where the system debuted alongside pilot partner The Other Side. For Aigner, who books the artists that define the club’s programme, what he heard in Amsterdam had direct implications for Cologne.

When I heard L-Acoustics DJ at ADE, it was immediately clear that this was more than just another sound system. The precision, impact and immersion were on another level, and I knew we needed to offer that experience at Bootshaus. For us, it is the next step in making the main floor one of Europe’s leading club environments. Combined with our crowd and reputation, it gives top artists another strong reason to play at Bootshaus, as well as a system that lets them experience their music at its absolute best, says Aigner.

More than 200,000 visitors and 500 DJs pass through Bootshaus each year. Artists performing on the main floor arrive with expectations shaped by their experience at the world’s best venues. The ability to perform with spatial audio—placing a bassline stage left, a vocal overhead or a melody circling the room—provides a new creative opportunity that very few clubs can offer.

Sound as strategy

Tom Thomas, Managing Director at Bootshaus, has consistently spoken about the club’s commitment to prioritising sound. When the venue began working with L-Acoustics in 2024, he made it clear: "Upgrading to L-Acoustics helps us maintain our coveted position as one of the best clubs in the world. Bootshaus has always been recognised for valuing sound over visuals". The addition of L-Acoustics DJ takes this investment to a new level.

Competition for both artists and audiences is stronger than ever, so it is no longer enough to simply have a great line-up. We must continue improving the experience itself. Investing in spatial audio allows us to create a level of sound, immersion and precision that people can genuinely feel from the moment they enter the room. For Bootshaus, this anniversary is not about looking back—it is about showing where we want to go next. We have always tried to stay curious, push boundaries and invest in the things that make a night unforgettable. This upgrade is another step in that direction: combining the energy and raw character Bootshaus is known for with technology that puts us at the forefront of the international club scene, comments Thomas.

From stereo to spatial: what L-Acoustics DJ delivers

L-Acoustics DJ runs on the L-ISA Processor II and is powered by Source Separate, a proprietary low-latency technology that uses machine learning to isolate the individual stems of a stereo track—beats, basslines, melodies and vocals—in real time as the DJ performs. These separated elements can then be positioned and moved around the physical space, transforming the dance floor: instead of playing only in front of the crowd, the music plays all around them.

The system integrates seamlessly into existing DJ workflows. There is no need to rethink the set, routing or technical rider. The spatial dimension is added to what the DJ already does, meaning the only barrier to adoption is the decision to use it, rather than the need to acquire new skills.

A new A Series configuration for the main floor

To unlock the full spatial potential of L-Acoustics DJ, Bootshaus has overhauled its main floor loudspeaker system with a 360° A Series 8.1.7 configuration. Flanking the DJ booth, two hangs of two A15 Wide over one A15 Focus anchor the system at the front. Six additional hangs—each comprising one A15 Wide over one A15 Focus—extend coverage around the sides and rear of the dance floor, completing the horizontal immersive field. Seven X12 coaxial enclosures provide the overhead height layer. Two A15 Focus serve as DJ monitors, while the entire system is driven by three LA7.16i amplified controllers.

The result is a system capable of delivering the sound pressure level (SPL) and low-end that Bootshaus audiences expect, while simultaneously placing a bassline stage left and a vocal overhead—an experience that stereo sound cannot provide.
