The Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Ferris wheel in London becomes a key visual feature thanks to a large-scale lighting design powered by CHAUVET Professional.
The 70-metre structure, known as The Giant Wheel, stands out not only for its presence in the event’s skyline, but also for its lighting system, composed of 24 Maverick Storm 1 Flex fixtures installed on its outer ring. The result is a projection of coloured beams that leverages the rotation of the wheel to create large-scale dynamic effects, visible from multiple points across the venue.
Set against the night sky, the installation not only reinforces the scenic character of the event, but also introduces an additional visual layer based on movement, colour, and scale. The design, developed by Janik Hensen for Dekor-Event, aims to create impact from a distance while maintaining precision in lighting execution.
The lights create a truly striking visual effect. For many visitors, it offers a different kind of experience, as the combination of height, movement, and colour produces a perception that is uncommon in this type of structure, explains Hensen.
From a technical standpoint, beam control and colour consistency were key factors. The continuous rotation of the Ferris wheel transforms static lighting states into dynamic sequences, expanding creative possibilities without adding programming complexity.
“It was essential to work with precision in both colour and positioning to create scenes that aligned with the overall event”, notes Hensen. “The fixture’s CMY system allowed us to achieve fast and controlled colour transitions”.
The project also required specific programming to limit light spill beyond the event area. The installation had to avoid interference with the surrounding environment and nearby residential zones, which required a high level of precision in aiming and positioning.
From an installation perspective, mounting the fixtures —each weighing close to 29 kg— on the outer ring of a 70-metre structure presented logistical challenges, particularly in winter conditions and within tight timeframes. A tailored mounting solution was used to optimise installation without compromising safety or stability.
The project presented unusual challenges due to the scale of the installation and the positioning of the fixtures. There are few reference points for this type of setup on Ferris wheels of this size within temporary environments. In this context, the reliability of the fixtures was critical to ensuring the final result, concludes Hensen.
With this intervention, the Ferris wheel not only retains its role as an attraction, but also becomes an active element within the event’s visual design, extending its impact beyond the individual ride experience.
