San Esteban Church in Salamanca upgrades its acoustics with Bose Pro technology

The San Esteban Church in Salamanca, a jewel of Spanish Renaissance art and one of the city’s most important historical monuments, visited annually by thousands of tourists and worshippers, has upgraded its sound system. The brand Bose Professional and the local company K-iman carried out the project.

The church initially faced several challenges, primarily due to the acoustics of the building, characteristic of old churches that were not designed to incorporate audio systems. Additionally, the aesthetic element was critical: everything installed had to ensure the church's art remained in its full splendor.

The first phase of the project involved segmenting the church into zones to analyze its acoustics: the church’s transept and its main nave have different acoustics and geometries, requiring distinct signal treatments. Additionally, the altar—a fairly large area—had to be optimized so that the celebrants could hear and follow the services with total clarity.

Fortunately, Bose Professional offers a variety of solutions within a comprehensive technological ecosystem. All its components—such as power amplifiers, processors, and speakers—work seamlessly. Coupled with the technical support from K-iman, this ensured that the spoken word, the cornerstone of these temples, is now heard with complete clarity. Worshippers can now experience consistent acoustics anywhere within this large and artistic temple.

Excessive reverberation—which traditional sound systems couldn’t reduce and which prevented the clear understanding of spoken words—has been significantly reduced. Now, both the elderly and the young not only hear but also clearly understand the message being preached. Choirs, with dedicated audio lines, have also benefited from the modern installation, enhancing the brilliance of celebrations and their music.

The modern installation also includes a feedback system to record live audio of services, stream it, or send it to cameras or external recorders—a feature usually found only in auditoriums. Now, everything sounds unified.

Special thanks go to the Bose Professional representative in Castilla y León for their support and to K-iman for their collaboration, professionalism, and technical effort to bring this project to a successful conclusion.
