LED technology, AI and VFX: a new formula for reinventing avatar concerts

Unit1 Studio has collaborated with Brompton Technology and ROE Visual to develop a new approach to avatar concerts based on LED technology, VFX, and AI-enhanced CGI.

Together, the three companies have combined Brompton’s Tessera LED processing platform with ROE Visual’s high-resolution LED displays to support Unit1 Studio’s latest developments in visual effects (VFX) and AI-enhanced computer-generated imagery (CGI), enabling the creation of digital avatars of human artists with an unprecedented level of realism.

Unit1 Studio was founded with the mission of transporting fans to legendary performances by the artists they admire. Until now, avatar-based concert experiences have been extremely expensive to produce, meaning that only the highest-grossing artists could afford shows featuring this type of technology. Unit1 Studio aims to change that reality. By significantly reducing production costs, its model becomes a viable solution for a much broader range of artists, music catalogue owners, and entertainment venues, bringing iconic performances to a new generation of audiences.

As the first demonstration of its capabilities in producing hyper-realistic avatars, Unit1 Studio collaborated with singer-songwriter KT Tunstall ahead of the 20th anniversary reissue of her breakthrough album Eye To The Telescope (released by BMG and Virgin on October 31, 2025).

The presentation took place at Brompton Technology’s facilities in West London, where the combination of ROE Visual’s 1.5 mm Topaz LED display and Brompton’s Tessera SX40 4K LED processor provided the ideal environment for Unit1 Studio to explore the capabilities of LED technology and evaluate firsthand the accuracy of Brompton’s colour management tools and dynamic calibration.

The exceptional colour accuracy and image clarity delivered by the Brompton and ROE Visual combination proved to be the key factor in making the illusion convincing. In a performance where details as subtle as the gap between an artist’s teeth and lips can be essential to achieving realism, accurate colour reproduction is what allows the audience’s brain to naturally accept what it is seeing. These are details viewers rarely notice consciously, but would immediately sense if they were wrong.

Throughout the project, Brompton’s technical support team worked alongside Unit1 Studio, providing guidance from the earliest stages on colour workflows, colour spaces, and rendering options.

Digital asset creation and colour pipeline management are central to Unit1 Studio’s production workflow, and Brompton’s Tessera processors are designed to meet these requirements.

Tessera delivers HDR-quality performance together with precise, scalable, and dynamic colour management, ensuring the same level of performance across projects of every size. In addition, the future-ready processing features available throughout the Tessera range ensure that every element of a performance is reproduced with complete reliability.

What made the difference in our collaboration with ROE Visual and Brompton was that they understood from the very beginning that this would be a long process, and that we all needed to work together to discover how far we could take it. There are not many companies willing to commit in that way, and Brompton’s support team was with us every step of the way, says Barney Wragg, CEO of Unit1 Studio.

Jonathan Sheard, Managing Director of ROE Visual UK, adds: "This project demonstrates what can be achieved when technology and creativity are aligned from day one. The precision and consistency of ROE Visual’s solutions allow creators to push realism to its limits, and we are proud to help open a new chapter for immersive avatar-led performances".

Finally, Rob Fowler, Director of Business Development at Brompton Technology, concludes:

This is a field where the capabilities of Brompton and ROE Visual are a natural fit. As in virtual production, realism is everything, and that final 1% can make the difference between whether the audience believes the illusion or not. Working alongside the Unit1 Studio team from day one has been a rewarding experience, and we are excited about what this collaboration can achieve.

Unit1 Studio’s work represents a significant step forward for avatar-based live entertainment. Its collaboration with ROE Visual and Brompton Technology combines technological innovation and creative vision to redefine the possibilities of live music performances.
