The Q-Beach House, an annual event organized by the largest commercial radio broadcaster in Flanders, Qmusic, has become a landmark on the Ostend coast during the summer months.
With activities that include live radio broadcasts, promotional concerts, and the famous Sunset mass events, this festival presents significant technical challenges due to its outdoor location and the magnitude of the audience, which can exceed 10,000 people.

Acoustic challenges in the beach environment
One of the main challenges faced by the technical team at Q-Beach House is the open location of the stage, facing the sea, with an audience distributed along a wide stretch of sand. This setup generates a series of acoustic difficulties that must be effectively addressed to ensure a uniform listening experience throughout all areas of the event, especially given that sound tends to disperse in open environments and reflect off surfaces such as water, walls, or nearby structures.
To ensure that all attendees, regardless of their location in the audience, can enjoy clear and well-balanced sound, it is essential to design an audio system that provides uniform coverage both horizontally and vertically, while also minimizing reflections and environmental interference caused by the wind and the sea. Low-frequency reinforcement systems and cardioid configurations are essential in these environments to control the behavior of low frequencies, reducing dispersion into unwanted areas such as the backstage or nearby residential zones.

Technical solutions implemented
For Q-Beach House, the sound system for the largest events consists of several main arrays and lateral reinforcement sources (outfill) to cover the entire audience area.
The use of compact and lightweight speakers is key to optimizing the setup, as this equipment not only facilitates assembly on temporary structures but also allows for a quick and flexible configuration, adapting to the event's conditions.
The technical approach includes a cardioid subwoofer setup, which allows for controlled direction of low frequencies towards the audience, minimizing the impact on unwanted areas, such as the stage or spaces outside the audience's reach. This is useful in events like this, where uncontrolled bass dispersion can be problematic due to the open nature of the venue.
Additionally, side arrays were used to ensure that sound reached the lateral areas of the audience uniformly, a critical requirement in such large spaces as the Ostend beach. The alignment and adjustment of the system were carried out using advanced acoustic simulation software, which allows for predicting sound behavior in the real environment before physical installation, thereby optimizing sound coverage.
