DAS Audio overcomes the challenge of providing sound for a rooftop exposed to Hamburg's weather

Clouds – Heaven’s Bar & Kitchen is located on the upper floors of the Tanzende Türme, a complex of two glass-and-steel towers that has become one of Hamburg’s architectural landmarks. Its distinctive leaning silhouette, inspired by a couple dancing the tango, makes it one of the city’s most recognisable buildings.

Completed in 2012, the building brings together offices, a hotel, leisure facilities and dining venues within a single complex.

The venue combines a restaurant, bar and rooftop terrace with panoramic views over the city, the harbour and the River Elbe. It hosts daily dining service, cocktail experiences, private events and music, meaning that each area required a sound solution tailored to its specific use and activity level.

AV Connect GmbH was responsible for planning the system, contributing its expertise in audiovisual solutions, event technology, streaming, projection, sound and lighting. MKSH GmbH handled the integration, adapting the technical solution to the venue’s architectural and operational requirements.

The project also benefited from the collaboration of Frank Kasten, DAS Audio Sales Manager for Northern Germany, whose involvement was instrumental in developing the concept and defining the final solution.

The challenge: weather resistance with discreet indoor integration

The project had to meet very different requirements within a single venue. In the restaurant and bar, the system needed to support daily service with clear, balanced and pleasant sound reproduction, without interfering with conversation or the venue's atmosphere. For private events, the installation had to provide greater headroom and adapt to higher sound pressure level requirements.

Heaven's Nest rooftop terrace presented an additional challenge. As an elevated outdoor space in a city like Hamburg, the installation had to withstand rain, humidity, wind and periods of snowfall during the winter months. At the same time, the system had to deliver even coverage and reliable performance in an exposed environment without compromising the venue's aesthetics or the panoramic city views.

The objective was to ensure that sound naturally complemented every area of the venue, from the indoor spaces to the rooftop terrace, through a discreet, flexible installation capable of adapting to different levels of activity.

The solution: ARTEC and DECO systems indoors, WR Series outdoors

For the restaurant and bar areas, the installation includes four ARTEC-510, two ARTEC-322S, six ARTEC-306 and six DECO-65 loudspeakers. This combination makes it possible to adapt coverage and sound levels to the characteristics of each area, maintaining a natural listening experience during regular service while providing additional output when the venue hosts events.

On the Heaven's Nest rooftop terrace, six WR-9606-DX, ten WR-8826-DX and two WR-218S-DX systems were installed. The DX versions are designed for fully exposed environments and feature a reinforced fibreglass coating that waterproofs the enclosure while protecting it against moisture and corrosion. This construction ensures reliable outdoor performance while maintaining precise sound reproduction for the terrace's daily operation.

The terrace required an outdoor-ready solution capable of delivering consistent performance in an environment exposed to the elements. The WR Series allowed us to combine durability, coverage and sound quality without compromising the integration of the system into the space.

Amplification and processing were configured using one INTEGRAL-MA1604, two INTEGRAL-M88, three INTEGRAL-A1604, one HA-4000, two HA-2700 and two INTEGRAL-A402 amplifiers. This architecture enables flexible management of the venue's different zones, optimises the performance of each system and simplifies overall installation control.

A solution designed to adapt to every environment

The installation meets the requirements of each area without disrupting the continuity of the overall experience. Indoors, the system supports daily service with a discreet and balanced sound presence, while on the terrace the WR-DX versions provide the durability required for an exposed location without sacrificing coverage or sound quality.

The result is a flexible solution designed to fit seamlessly into the venue's day-to-day operation, providing background music during service, supporting private events, delivering higher output levels when required and enabling independent control of each zone.

The system had to perform naturally in every area, without becoming intrusive in the restaurant or falling short on the terrace. The combination of indoor systems and the WR Series enabled us to maintain that continuity throughout the venue.
