Thum + Mahr, a systems integration specialist and part of the Broadcast Solutions group, has delivered a third DHD audio console to News Broadcasting, part of the News UK media group. The DHD RX2 console is now in use at the talkSPORT studio complex.
News Broadcasting, headquartered in London with a strong presence in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, reaches a monthly audience of almost 40 million people across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Its brands include national radio stations such as Times Radio, Virgin, and Talk, as well as a group of leading local stations in Ireland.
The production facility in London features a wide infrastructure connected via Livewire technology. News Broadcasting wanted to expand this connectivity to a fully open platform, offering greater flexibility and configuration options. In September 2024, it turned to Thum + Mahr for a trial.
This initially led to the installation of two DHD consoles: one in a backup studio —to be used while others are under maintenance or reconstruction— and another for training and testing new configurations before going live on air.
Now, News Broadcasting has once again trusted Thum + Mahr for a third console, a large DHD RX2 for the main talkSPORT studio.
The flexibility of the RX2 impressed us. It is designed for modern workflows in live on-air studios, and we can quickly reconfigure the infrastructure according to programming needs and time of day. Supporting both native SMPTE 2110 and Livewire AES67, it integrates seamlessly into the network, said Edd Norton, systems project engineer at News Broadcasting.
“Thum + Mahr supported us throughout the process, from the initial enquiries to installation and handover”, Norton added. “Thanks to our experience with the first two DHD consoles, we were ready for this major live installation, and everything works as we expected”.
For his part, Rupert Brun, Broadcast Consultant (UK) at Thum + Mahr, stated: “Our goal is always to thoroughly understand the customer’s requirements and then work together to find the best solution. This naturally takes time, but it ensures that the installed system truly meets the technical and operational needs of the facility”.
It is essential for News Broadcasting to future-proof its infrastructure, not only against evolving industry standards but also against changes in commercial and operational demands. We designed this solution to adapt to their processes and workflows rather than dictating how they should operate. It works today and will continue to meet requirements as they evolve, Brun added.
