WSDG enhances sound and safety at the largest stadium in Latin America

Following an ambitious renovation carried out between 2020 and 2023, the Mâs Monumental Stadium, the legendary home of Club Atlético River Plate and Argentina’s national football team, has been transformed into one of the most advanced sports and entertainment venues in the world.

With a capacity exceeding 86,000 spectators, the Mâs Monumental is setting new global standards in infrastructure and fan experience. A key component of this transformation was the comprehensive renovation of the stadium’s sound system, led by global acoustic design and technology systems specialists WSDG.

Implemented in close collaboration with Bosch and Electro-Voice, the new electroacoustic system was designed to deliver exceptional speech intelligibility, uniform coverage, and immersive sound for both sporting events and large-scale concerts.

WSDG conducted a detailed technical review of the proposed design, provided key optimization recommendations, and oversaw the system’s final on-site calibration to ensure optimal performance.

 

Designing for stadiums always involves achieving the ideal balance between clarity and emotional energy. At the Mâs Monumental, we managed to create a sound experience that enhances every word, cheer, and musical moment with power and precision, said Sergio Molho, Partner and Director of Business Development at WSDG.

 

This upgrade had been long awaited. For years, River Plate relied on temporary, rented sound systems installed at field level, which resulted in uneven coverage and poor intelligibility. The original system, installed for the 1978 World Cup, had become obsolete both technologically and functionally.

“A new sound system was non-negotiable within the renovation project”, explained Rodrigo Álvarez, Principal Architect and Head of Construction at Club Atlético River Plate. “It was essential not only to enhance the fan experience, but above all to ensure safety. We sought top-tier partners with proven stadium expertise, which is why we turned to WSDG”.

The final solution combined distributed point-source loudspeakers with arrays mounted in the box areas, all managed through advanced digital processing to maintain sonic consistency throughout the venue. WSDG also applied its expertise in Technical Interior Design (TID), improving sound quality and speech clarity across the entire stadium.

Integrating a state-of-the-art system into a stadium built in the 1930s presented unique structural and logistical challenges.

We had to inspect and reinforce aging concrete structures, modernize electrical systems, and coordinate each installation between matches and events. Despite these constraints, we achieved a system that integrates harmoniously with the architecture and significantly elevates the venue’s overall experience, added Álvarez.

 

And that experience is more relevant than ever. River Plate closed 2024 by once again being recognized as the football club with the highest attendance in the world, averaging 84,567 fans per game and over 2.4 million attendees throughout the season.

 

The improvements to the Mâs Monumental, including its new state-of-the-art sound system, have been essential in attracting these record crowds and solidifying its reputation as one of the world’s leading venues for both sports and live entertainment.

“The reaction from both fans and artists has been one of total amazement”, added Álvarez. “The improvement in sound quality was immediate, and it’s a key factor in why our stadium was selected as a venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup”.
