The Shrine of Fátima is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Located in central Portugal, the sanctuary holds a powerful sense of spirituality and connection that attracts millions of visitors every year, many of whom travel long distances on foot to reach the site.
To support gatherings of this scale, the site has implemented a new audio system based on Renkus-Heinz IC Live beam-steering technology, designed to deliver clear and consistent sound across its vast outdoor spaces.
The site, centred around a large prayer area connecting two basilicas and a chapel, regularly hosts congregations of between 50,000 and 100,000 people during the main outdoor celebration season. The largest festivities, held on May 13 and October 13, place concert-scale demands on the Shrine’s audio infrastructure, where reliable communication is essential. However, the previous sound system was no longer able to provide the required intelligibility and coverage, leading to a comprehensive upgrade.
To address these major challenges, project consultant and system designer Ricardo Castro from RCOE specified Renkus-Heinz IC Live beam-steering arrays, including five ICL-F-RD loudspeakers and 38 ICL-F-DUAL-RD units. The project was carried out in collaboration with distributor SeeSound, while the Shrine’s in-house technical team handled the system installation and integration.
At such an important religious site, it was essential to find a solution capable of delivering the required clarity for both speech and music during every type of ceremony, while also respecting the site’s renowned historic architecture, explains Castro.
With minimal physical boundaries and significant wind and environmental noise, achieving effective control of sound reflections was critical. The IC Live arrays were installed on lighting pillars positioned around the outdoor prayer area. This strategic placement, combined with the ICL-F series’ digital beam-steering technology, ensures that sound is directed precisely toward the audience, delivering clear and coherent speech reproduction. The use of dual modules allows for higher SPL levels and tighter vertical control, providing consistent audio performance during large-scale ceremonies.

“Controlled vertical dispersion helps minimize reflections and reduce noise spill, while ensuring audible projection above crowd noise”, says Castro. “The loudspeakers’ IP54 rating, alongside Finnish birch enclosures and robust steel grilles, makes them ideal for this exposed outdoor environment, where reliable performance is required under all weather conditions”.
To ensure consistent sound coverage across such a large open space, an additional central pillar equipped with loudspeakers was added. “At first, the architects were concerned that a new pillar might alter the Shrine’s aesthetics”, recalls Castro. “However, once they saw how the compact loudspeakers blended perfectly into both the slim profile of the pillar and the surrounding environment, they were reassured”. All loudspeakers were custom painted and the cabling carefully concealed, allowing the system to enhance the visitor experience without interfering with the striking architectural setting.
“As a global pilgrimage destination hosting multiple daily ceremonies, including night-time celebrations, installation work had to be carefully planned”, explains Castro. IC Live’s digital beam-steering technology reduced installation complexity, eliminating the need for complicated physical adjustments and angling hardware. “The loudspeaker settings were predefined using Renkus-Heinz’s RHAON configuration software, minimizing commissioning time and reducing disruption during religious services”.
In addition to supporting ceremonies and large celebrations, the new system was designed with public safety in mind. The previous infrastructure lacked redundancy, whereas the new design ensures reliability through multiple rack rooms, maintaining at least 50% network operation in the event of a major failure. Additional safeguards include primary and secondary Dante paths, a third AES-EBU feed, and analog backup in critical areas.
Since installation, visitor response has changed dramatically, replacing previous complaints with praise for the system’s clarity and consistency. Although the Shrine’s full audio renovation will continue over the next four to five years, this phase has already established a new performance benchmark.
The transformation has been incredible. Complaints about the sound have disappeared and been replaced by very positive feedback regarding the system’s clarity and quality. Pilgrims and visitors consistently highlight the excellent intelligibility and balanced audio across the entire frequency range, confirms Castro.
The upgraded audio system at the Shrine of Fátima now supports events of extraordinary scale, from daily services to major international pilgrimage celebrations attracting tens of thousands of people. Thanks to advanced beam-steering technology, the Renkus-Heinz IC Live system ensures that every message can be delivered with exceptional clarity and reliability.
As the Shrine’s long-term redevelopment project continues, this installation demonstrates how precision audio design can enhance both the spiritual experience and the operational resilience of large outdoor worship environments. Its success reinforces the Shrine’s commitment to connection and clear communication for future generations.
