The new Sommer cable panel-mount BNC crimp sockets are designed to integrate 4K and UHD signals into studios, production units and professional AV installations, where even the slightest deviation can compromise infrastructure performance.
The arrival of 12G-SDI makes it possible to transmit UHD signals through a single coaxial cable, simplifying the design of many professional video infrastructures. However, the increase in bandwidth also places greater demands on every component within the signal chain.
Against this backdrop, Sommer cable presents its HICON© 12G-SDI panel-mount BNC crimp sockets, developed to provide reliable, standards-compliant integration in broadcast systems, studios, technical racks and other professional AV installations.
Available for coaxial cables with different diameters, the new sockets allow the connection to be adapted to a range of installation configurations:
- 0.6/2.8 mm: BNC0.6/2.8FE-UHD
- 0.8/3.7 mm: BNC0.8/3.7FE-UHD
- 1.2/5.0 mm: BNC1.2/5.0FE-UHD
- 1.6/7.0 mm: BNC1.6/7.0FE-UHD
The importance of every connection in a UHD infrastructure
As transmission speeds increase, small inaccuracies in connectors, terminations or impedance matching can lead to losses, reflections or signal instability. For this reason, the HICON© sockets maintain a 75 Ω impedance and use precision manufacturing to deliver stable, low-loss signal transmission.
The contact surfaces feature a 4 μm hard-gold coating, while the brass housing also has a hard-gold finish. This construction is intended to improve corrosion resistance and maintain long-term operational reliability, even in demanding working environments.
The crimping technology creates a direct connection between the cable and the socket, providing a mechanically secure joint optimized in terms of attenuation. This is particularly relevant in permanent installations, production racks, connection panels and equipment subjected to intensive use.
Thanks to their standardized 1/2" thread, the sockets can be neatly integrated into panels, racks or equipment units. For applications requiring an especially rugged construction, they are also available in a metal D-flange housing.
The familiar BNC bayonet locking system allows connections to be made quickly and secured reliably, a practical advantage in studios, outside broadcast units and production environments where changes must be carried out rapidly without compromising signal continuity.
