Shure has become a minority investor in EDGE Sound Research, a start-up developing new experiential audio technologies that are redefining how audiences consume sound.
The company was founded in 2019 by two students from the University of California, Riverside, Ethan Castro and Valtteri Salomaki. Castro was inspired by his life experiences as a music producer and engineer with hearing impairment. Salomaki has focused on information systems and marketing strategy. Together, they have built an innovative organization working to revolutionize entertainment.
Shure and EDGE Sound Research have already collaborated on several innovations. For example, Shure’s DCA901, the first array microphone designed for broadcast, delivers an enhanced immersive experience in homes thanks to EDGE Sound Research’s virtual sound engine. Fans watching the game from their sofas can now hear it with the same immersive sensation that was once exclusive to premium seating.
The Virtual Sound Engine software analyzes detailed game audio captured by the DCA901 and automatically identifies and isolates the sound objects that define emotion, rhythm, and connection. The combination of DCA901 and Virtual Sound Engine transforms the fan experience from passive observation to active participation, creating significant value for all stakeholders.
