A passive 1 SOUND system solves acoustic challenges at St. John the Baptist

Peak Systems Group was contracted to complete an audio upgrade at St. John the Baptist Church in Jefferson, Wisconsin, and set out to deliver a passive, high-quality and intelligible sound system in a sanctuary with reflective surfaces.

The client wanted to move away from steerable column arrays. While these systems often address difficult acoustics, a prior negative experience led them to request a fully passive approach. The remodeled sanctuary required a system that could perform at a high level without compromising aesthetics or architectural integrity, explained Isaac Mittlesteadt, Design Engineer at Peak Systems Group.

With these requirements in mind, Peak Systems Group selected the 1 SOUND Contour CT28, Cannon C5i and SUB12 loudspeakers to achieve both performance and visual integration.

The CT28’s precise pattern control proved valuable in a sanctuary that became more reflective after the removal of carpeting, while its smooth high-frequency response delivered clear and intelligible speech throughout the space.

Mittlesteadt noted: “A quick model in Auralis (1 SOUND’s 3D audio prediction software) confirmed the proper mounting heights and down angles for the CT28’s horn pattern, supporting the overall design strategy”. The C5i complemented the CT28 as audio support in smaller zones, while the SUB12 provided the low-frequency support required for music and speech without overwhelming the space.

Aesthetics were also a key element of the design. Even in its standard white finish, the 1 SOUND enclosures blended seamlessly with the sanctuary’s renovated architecture. “Ensuring the system matched the sanctuary’s aesthetics helped minimize potential negative feedback”. said Mittlesteadt. The careful integration of the system allowed the congregation to experience clear and natural sound without visually distracting elements.

The result is a fully passive, high-performance audio system that delivers consistent coverage, transparency and clarity throughout the sanctuary.

1 SOUND is a great partner to work with. The family-operated company, with its close-knit approach, aligns well with the heritage and culture of Peak Systems Group, and we are happy to have them as part of our loudspeaker portfolio, added Mittlesteadt.

The system now provides the church with an elegant and effective solution for speech reinforcement and music, perfectly aligned with the space’s updated design while addressing its acoustic challenges.
