Since its inception in 2018, Theory Professional was clear that, in order to bring true value to the commercial and professional installation market, it had to be different. With that inspiration, the company has made a name for itself by offering unique, high-performance products with innovative designs and a strong focus on sound quality.
In this exclusive interview, conducted in collaboration with Celestion, Paul Hales —owner and CEO of Theory Professional— shares his passion for music, his beginnings in audio equipment design, the philosophy of his company, and his mission to break the status quo.
The origins of a calling
Hales’ path in professional audio was born from his love of music and the influence of his father, a hi-fi enthusiast who assembled kits and speakers with JBL components. It all began when, at twelve years old, his small stereo system broke down.

My father suggested I sell my drum set, which was already driving everyone crazy at home, and buy a real system. I got quite a bit of money for the drums and spent $670 on a hi-fi system. It was 1977, and that was a serious system for a twelve-year-old. From that moment, I was hooked, he recalls.
His interest in audio grew rapidly. At 16 he designed and built his first speakers, using a high school carpentry class to make the enclosures and developing his own crossover networks. “I was fascinated by the whole process: the engineering, the industrial design, being able to style those systems. That led me to go to college with the intention of founding a loudspeaker company, adapting my education at UC Davis to applications in acoustics and loudspeaker design”.
From high fidelity to the professional world
In 1988 he founded Hales Design Group, focused on high-end products for audiophiles. However, he soon became disenchanted with that sector, considering it limited and unable to convey the real power of live music. In 2000 he joined QSC, where he created the loudspeaker R&D department. “I spent four years designing professional speakers with exceptional dynamic range that also sounded like hi-fi systems. That is my unique value proposition, and those same principles now underpin Theory Professional, extending this approach to broader commercial and professional applications”.

Precision and innovation as a hallmark
Speaking about the success of Theory Professional, Hales sums it up clearly: “Our main strength is our ability to achieve exceptional levels of precision in loudspeakers. We wanted to break the status quo and, despite being a small team, we are working at a very high level, which has allowed us to achieve early success in high-end projects and rapid adoption in the industry”. The difference also lies in the construction:
Our products are completely different; they are made of aluminum, with proprietary high-level transducers —supplied by Celestion— and feature compact, very stylish designs. All of this, combined with hi-fi sound quality and high power, along with a strong focus on design, has been very well received in the market.
Simple catalog, versatile solutions
Another hallmark is the simplicity of its range. Hales explains with an example: “Our overall philosophy is to keep a simple product catalog. A specific example is the ic6 Acoustic Core, a six-inch ceiling speaker that can also function as a pendant or landscape speaker, depending on the venue where it is installed. This standardization simplifies inventory and maintenance for customers, since a single reference covers multiple audio needs”.

A vision for the future
Looking to the future, Hales is clear:
We believe our path lies primarily in the commercial installation sector. As a smaller company, our resilience and ability to adapt quickly to industry changes and customer demands gives us an advantage over larger companies. In addition, our strong customer relationships and the importance of recommendations position us to continue growing.
