K-array transforms visual silence into an immersive sound experience

Hidden away in Ebisu, one of Tokyo’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, BAR DANRO is one of those venues that rewards those who manage to find it. Conceived around a luxury vintage concept, it combines the charm of a hidden speakeasy with the refined elegance of an exclusive hotel lounge.

At the heart of the venue is a stone fireplace that serves as the focal point, around which guests settle into designer sofas to enjoy carefully crafted cocktails, surrounded by an atmosphere of warmth and understated sophistication. In a space curated with such meticulous attention to detail, every element had to justify its place, including the sound system.

The brief from interior design studio cafe.co was clear: deliver high-resolution sound without compromising the venue’s aesthetics. The loudspeakers had to disappear visually, whether wall-mounted or completely concealed, in order to preserve the integrity of the luxury vintage design. It was a set of requirements that pointed unmistakably towards K-array.

cafe.co first discovered K-array at a trade show, where the ultra-slim design of its products and their sound quality immediately caught the team’s attention. When it came time to select the audio system for BAR DANRO, the studio turned to Japanese integrator SURD Co., Ltd, whose engineers have more than 15 years of experience working with K-array, marking the beginning of a close collaboration between designer and integrator. By the time SURD officially joined the project, the interior design had already been finalised, allowing the team to focus entirely on integrating a world-class audio system without leaving any visual trace.

K-array was the right solution from the very beginning. Its products gave us the freedom to be creative with the installation thanks to their extremely discreet design, and the acoustic performance exceeded even our initial expectations, says Keita Kawakami, Sales Executive at SURD Co., Ltd.

The system is distributed across several distinct zones, each with its own acoustic characteristics and design requirements. In the main bar area surrounding the fireplace, SURD installed ultra-slim Vyper KV25 II line array loudspeakers together with Rumble KU26 subwoofers. The goal was to create a noticeable musical presence at each table, providing a sense of intimacy while subtly masking conversations between different groups of guests without becoming intrusive.

One detail reflects the care that went into the installation: near the entrance, a Vyper KV25 II was mounted at a height of 160 cm, allowing guests to experience K-array sound from the very moment they step inside. From there, the audio experience unfolds throughout the venue.

In the two VIP rooms, where loudspeaker invisibility was the highest priority, SURD selected miniature Lyzard KZ1 I line array speakers together with compact Truffle KTR24 subwoofers. Both products feature minimalist designs that allow them to blend almost completely into the surroundings. Guests in these private rooms also have independent volume control and can mute the system entirely if they wish, providing a level of autonomy that perfectly reflects the venue’s exclusive hospitality concept.

For the remaining areas, including the restrooms, kitchen and corridors, GC5 and GC3 ceiling loudspeakers were selected for their combination of acoustic performance and visual discretion.

The entire system is powered by five amplifiers, distributing the audio signal throughout all areas of the venue. While the bar staff manage the sound in the main area, guests in the VIP rooms independently control their own acoustic environment.

To ensure consistent, high-quality coverage in a space with reflective surfaces, varying occupancy levels and ambient noise, SURD applied a professional calibration methodology based on measurement microphones—the same approach commonly used in concert halls and high-end performance venues. The result has been extremely well received, with many guests, including sound engineers and industry professionals, praising the system’s clarity and dynamic performance.

BAR DANRO is a perfect example of what K-array products are designed to achieve. The combination of our Vyper and Lyzard line array loudspeakers with the Rumble and Truffle subwoofers, complemented by our GC ceiling speakers, enabled SURD to create a fully distributed sound environment that remains invisible to the eye but impossible to ignore with the ear. When design integrity and acoustic performance come together at this level, the result speaks for itself, says Alessandro Saudelli, Sales Manager at K-array.

For Keita Kawakami and the SURD team, the BAR DANRO project confirmed one essential point about K-array: when its products are installed and calibrated with precision, the results consistently exceed initial expectations. In a bar where every detail has been designed to evoke a specific emotion, the sound system has become one of its most discreet—and at the same time, most powerful—elements.
